  12.      _I_m_p_r_e_s_s_a_r_i_o provides a printing and scanning server environment for
  13.      Silicon Graphics workstations. Printing and scanning solutions are
  14.      provided for driver developers, application programmers and end users.

  17.      The _I_m_p_r_e_s_s_a_r_i_o printing environment is built on top of the AT&T System V
  18.      printer spooling system. Model files, filters and printer drivers are
  19.      provided to convert a wide variety of file types, including ISO text
  20.      files, many different image file formats, and PostScript documents to a
  21.      format suitable for both raster printers and PostScript printers. Using
  22.      the _I_m_p_r_e_s_s_a_r_i_o host-based PostScript interpreter it is possible to print
  23.      PostScript documents to non-PostScript printers with performance that
  24.      greatly surpasses most printer-based PostScript interpreters.

  26.      _I_m_p_r_e_s_s_a_r_i_o provides support for a wide range of printers, from low cost
  27.      color to high speed black and white printers.

  29.      The _I_m_p_r_e_s_s_a_r_i_o Developer's Kit contains a battery of solutions for
  30.      printer driver developers and application programmers who need to provide
  31.      printing from their programs. For driver developers sample source code is
  32.      provided for a spooling system model file, printer driver, and graphical
  33.      options panel. Specifications are provided for writing _I_m_p_r_e_s_s_a_r_i_o
  34.      compliant print filters, drivers and graphical options panels.  For
  35.      application writers and driver developers, the developer's kit also
  36.      contains three printing related libraries. The libraries _l_i_b_s_p_o_o_l and
  37.      _l_i_b_p_r_i_n_t_u_i make it easy to add printing capabilities to any application.
  38.      The third library, _l_i_b_p_o_d allows a printer driver to maintain a database
  39.      of printer status information and provides applications with a network
  40.      transparent API for querying the status of a printer.

  44.      The _I_m_p_r_e_s_s_a_r_i_o scanning environment is a completely new architecture for
  45.      generic scanner support.  _I_m_p_r_e_s_s_a_r_i_o scanner application programs and
  46.      _I_m_p_r_e_s_s_a_r_i_o scanner drivers run as separate executables in an open
  47.      architecture, enabling any Impressario-compatible scanner application to
  48.      interact with any Impressario-compatible scanner driver.

  50.      _g_s_c_a_n(1) is a graphical scanning tool that is an _I_m_p_r_e_s_s_a_r_i_o scanner
  51.      application program.  As such, it can scan from any _I_m_p_r_e_s_s_a_r_i_o scanner
  52.      driver, including special drivers that can scan from any SGI monitor and
  53.      even from SGI image files.

  83.      interest to software developers. The first library, _l_i_b_s_t_i_f_f, provides an
  84.      API for writing and reading streamable TIFF 6.0 compatible image files
  85.      for interchange between filters and drivers. The second library, _l_i_b_i_m_p,
  86.      provides an API for reading, writing and manipulating SGI Image Format
  87.      files. _l_i_b_i_m_p also provides image zooming and a large selection of color
  88.      space conversion routines.
